Margaret Lindsay Williams’s The Devil’s Daughter (1917) stages a theatrical encounter between glittering elegance and reminders of mortality. The woman’s illuminated face, decorated dress and open fan emerge sharply from a largely black background, while the skull held against her body introduces a more unsettling register. Her expressive pose gives the composition an air of performance and calculated confidence. The painting’s force comes from this tension between surface splendour and darker suggestion, with small highlights guiding the eye across an otherwise enveloping darkness.
