The Demon (1904), also known as In the Café, by Wojciech Weiss captures an unsettling encounter in an almost empty café. A woman hides her face against a tabletop while the man opposite watches with detached composure. Muted colours, red chairs and pale interior light heighten the psychological tension, turning an everyday setting into a meditation on anguish, isolation and destructive relationships. The painting belongs to the National Museum in Kraków.
