Giulio Aristide Sartorio’s Diana of Ephesus and the Slaves (1895–1899) gathers a dense assembly of human figures around a rigid, richly ornamented image of the goddess. Pale bodies overlap against a rocky setting, their bent limbs and varied poses creating a continuous movement across the foreground. The idol’s stillness offers a severe counterpoint to this restless accumulation of living forms.
The work forms a diptych with The Gorgon and the Heroes, bringing mythological subjects into the monumental language of late nineteenth-century Symbolism. Sartorio contrasts the tactile richness of flesh and stone with the remote presence of the sacred image. The relationship between worship, submission and bodily vulnerability remains unsettled rather than resolved into a simple story. Its elaborate arrangement rewards close looking: individual gestures emerge from the larger rhythm, while light binds the figures into a single, psychologically charged composition.
