The Moon and Sleep | Simeon Solomon | 1894

In The Moon and Sleep (1894), Simeon Solomon brings two closely aligned profiles into a hushed nocturnal setting. Auburn hair and softly modelled faces emerge from the surrounding darkness, while a pale crescent and distant stars establish the dreamlike atmosphere. The near meeting of the figures gives the composition a sense of tenderness and suspended time. Its restrained movement and luminous passages of colour reflect Solomon’s distinctive Symbolist approach to myth, longing and contemplation.
