An exceptional 18th century French Neoclassical oil on panel depicting The Death of Patroclus by the School of Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825). This finely executed composition portrays the fallen Patroclus being borne from the battlefield under the protection of Menelaus and Ajax, moments after being slain and stripped of his armour by Hector. The scene, drawn from Homer’s Iliad, captures a pivotal turning point in the Trojan War—the event that compels Achilles to re-join the Achaean forces in vengeance. The painting’s refined draughtsmanship, classical restraint, and heroic sentiment are characteristic of Jacques-Louis David and his circle.
Presented in its original antique gilt frame.
