The 20th Century | Fritz Gareis | 1916

The 20th Century (1916) by Fritz Gareis (1872–1925) presents a chilling allegory of the modern age through a colossal mechanical figure rising from a desolate landscape. Its grim, expressionless face and decaying, organic form merge machine and flesh into a vision of industrial power and dehumanisation, while the blood-red horizon heightens the painting's ominous atmosphere. Created during the First World War, the work reflects the anxieties and destructive forces that came to define the twentieth century.
