Moonlit Landscape (1849) by Arnold Böcklin is a hauntingly atmospheric oil painting depicting the ruins of a Gothic chapel illuminated by moonlight. The crumbling structure, overgrown with ivy, stands stark against a backdrop of dark forest and a turbulent, cloud-laden sky. In the foreground, a lone rider on horseback gallops into the shadows, adding a sense of mystery and urgency. Böcklin masterfully contrasts light and dark to evoke a mood of romantic melancholy and eerie stillness.
