Memento Mori by Paula Wildhack (Austrian, 1872–1955) is a refined meditation on mortality in the tradition of the vanitas still life. A human skull, devotional books, rosary, crucifix, extinguishing candle, and delicate blossoms are carefully arranged as enduring symbols of life's brevity, the passage of time, and the hope of spiritual redemption. Through its restrained composition and rich chiaroscuro, the painting invites contemplation of the fleeting nature of earthly existence and the promise of eternal life.
