This 1861 engraving by Gustave Doré, titled "Lucifer", depicts Satan as a colossal, winged figure trapped in the frozen lake of Cocytus at the center of Hell, as described in Dante’s Inferno. His massive, menacing form looms over the barren landscape, devouring a sinner in his jaws, while Dante and Virgil stand in the foreground, dwarfed by his terrifying presence. Doré’s intricate line work and stark contrasts create a chilling atmosphere of despair and eternal punishment.
