In Lenore (1896), Kirchbach illustrates the haunting moment from Gottfried August Bürger’s famous ballad, where the dead lover returns to claim Lenore and carries her on a wild ride through the night. The ghostly rider urges his horse forward as Lenore, draped in white, collapses in terror across the saddle while they leap over a cemetery wall beneath a star-filled sky. The barren landscape, distant churchyard, and skeletal trees heighten the macabre atmosphere, capturing the Romantic fascination with death, fate, and supernatural love.
