Inheritance (Norwegian: 1897–1899) is an oil on canvas by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944). The work portrays a grieving mother afflicted with syphilis cradling her infant, who suffers from congenital syphilis. Munch was inspired to create the painting after visiting the Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris, where he witnessed a woman weeping for her stricken child. The composition centers on the stark contrast between the child’s lifeless, pallid body—marked with red lesions—and the mother’s sorrowful, flushed face, partially hidden by a handkerchief. Her patterned skirt and clasping hands are rendered with striking prominence, set against a subdued green backdrop that heightens the work’s somber and unflinching realism.
