Gerard Dou’s "Hermit at Prayer" (c.1670) depicts an elderly monk in quiet devotion, gazing at a crucifix while surrounded by symbols of mortality and faith. A skull, hourglass, rosary, and open scriptures emphasize themes of piety, meditation, and the transience of earthly life, while the dimly lit setting enhances the contemplative, spiritual atmosphere.
