In this stark and unsettling illustration, Gustave Doré (1832–1883) depicts Cupid seated atop a vast mountain of human skulls, holding a small pistol in his hands. The innocent, childlike figure of love is transformed into a disturbing allegory, where desire becomes a force of violence and destruction rather than romance. Rendered with Doré’s dense cross-hatching and dramatic shadows, the scene suggests that love, when corrupted, can be as deadly as war—lingering coldly amid the remains of its victims.
