"Allegory of the Redemption" by Jacopo Ligozzi (1547–1627) is a dramatic and symbolic depiction of Christian salvation. At its center lies the lifeless body of Christ supported by the Virgin Mary, beneath the cross of the Crucifixion. Flanking the scene are personifications of Death (a skeleton holding an hourglass) and Sin (a demon-like figure with bat wings), symbolizing humanity’s fallen state. A serpent, traditionally representing Satan, lurks at the lower left. Above, two cherubs represent divine mercy and hope. The painting captures the stark contrast between the forces of evil and the redemptive sacrifice of Christ.
