The Anarchist | Sascha Schneider | 1894

In The Anarchist (1894), Sascha Schneider stages a dramatic confrontation between a vulnerable human figure and a monumental carved idol. The figure raises a spherical object above his head, while the looming faces and heavy forms of the opposing structure amplify the disparity in scale. Strong light across the body contrasts with dense surrounding darkness, giving the encounter a sculptural intensity. The image brings the charged themes of authority, resistance and individual will into the visionary language of late nineteenth-century Symbolism.
