William Blake’s Hecate, also known as The Night of Enitharmon’s Joy, gathers a mysterious group around an open book within a dark, inhabited landscape. Nocturnal creatures and unfamiliar forms extend the scene’s imaginative reach beyond its central figures, while selective illumination draws attention to faces, limbs and gestures. The composition feels both intimate and ceremonial. Created around 1795, the image resists a single literal reading, presenting the supernatural through a dense interplay of human presence, animal life and surrounding shadow.
