Edmund Dulac presents the Snow Queen as a spectral presence drifting above the snow-covered roofs of a northern town. Her pale, flowing form seems to dissolve into the falling snow, while the illuminated windows and the glowing rose window of a Gothic church offer small islands of warmth against the deep blue night. Intricate architectural detail gives the imagined town a convincing solidity, heightening the strangeness of its silent visitor.
Created in 1910 and published in Stories from Hans Andersen in 1911, the illustration accompanies the passage in which the Snow Queen flies through the streets and peers into windows. Dulac’s delicate handling of colour and line transforms Andersen’s winter apparition into an image of beauty, mystery and quiet unease.
