Odilon Redon’s The Crying Spider (1881) places a sorrowful human face within the body of a fantastic arachnid. Slender, irregular legs extend into the surrounding space, while dark, densely worked passages give the head an unusual weight and presence. The creature seems at once vulnerable and disturbing.

Rather than describing a recognisable species, Redon uses the imagined form to suggest an inward emotional world. The meeting of human expression and unfamiliar anatomy gives the drawing its enduring ambiguity. This work is distinct from his better-known The Smiling Spider.
