Henry Fuseli’s Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking (1784) gives Shakespeare’s scene of disturbed conscience the intensity of a theatrical apparition. Lady Macbeth advances from the darkness carrying a light, her extended arm and fixed expression directing attention beyond the visible space. A doctor and attendant watch from the shadowed background, their smaller figures reinforcing her commanding presence.
Drawn from Act V of Macbeth, the subject centres on guilt that returns involuntarily during sleep. Fuseli expresses that psychological disturbance through an elongated pose, emphatic gesture and a sharp contrast between illumination and darkness. The background offers little relief or descriptive detail: light exposes the heroine while leaving the surrounding space uncertain. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784, the painting demonstrates Fuseli’s distinctive treatment of literary subjects, in which heightened bodily expression gives invisible fears and memories a disturbing physical force.
