Kyffin Williams: The Light and The Dark

Kyffin Williams found an extraordinary range of feeling in closely observed Welsh landscapes. Mountains, skies and isolated buildings emerge through thick paint, restrained colour and decisive dark contours. Rian Evans’s monograph examines the artist behind those recognisable surfaces, following a career that extended well beyond landscape alone.
Paintings are accompanied by portraits, drawings, watercolours and linocuts, while photographs by Nicholas Sinclair add another perspective on Williams’s world. The book considers his place within British and European art as well as his close connection with Wales. For readers drawn to the atmospheric side of Dark Gloomy Art, it offers a substantial study of weather, terrain and the expressive weight that an apparently quiet landscape can carry.
