Painted in April 1890, only a few months before his death, At Eternity’s Gate stands as one of Van Gogh’s most poignant meditations on human despair and resilience. The composition—an elderly man seated on a wooden chair, his head buried in his hands—embodies the artist’s deep empathy for loneliness and the quiet suffering of old age. Created during his recovery from a severe depressive episode, Van Gogh reinterpreted an earlier drawing from his time in Brabant, transforming it through his mature, expressive brushwork and somber palette of blues and ochres.
