Gustave Moreau’s "Diomedes Devoured by His Horses" (1870) depicts a violent episode from Greek mythology, in which Diomedes, the cruel king of Thrace, is punished for his brutality. According to the myth, Diomedes fed strangers to his savage, man-eating horses until Heracles (Hercules) overthrew him and delivered him to the very beasts he had trained. Moreau presents the moment of retribution in a swirling, dramatic composition, where the frenzied horses and collapsing figure embody both physical terror and moral judgment, transforming the scene into a Symbolist meditation on cruelty, justice, and divine vengeance.
