"Irrsinn" (Madness). This haunting Expressionist painting by Albert Birkle portrays a man gripped by psychological torment. A skeletal, monstrous figure looms over him, clawing at his head and shoulders, symbolizing inner demons or madness. With bulging eyes and a distressed expression, the man appears trapped in a state of mental anguish. The stark red background and distorted anatomy heighten the emotional intensity, embodying the raw fear and alienation associated with insanity in post-World War I Germany.
