The Demon | Alfred Eberling | 1910
Steuern inbegriffen
Alfred Eberling’s illustration for Mikhail Lermontov’s The Demon (1910) presents a haunting and intimate vision of supernatural temptation and quiet terror. Emerging from deep shadow, the dark, winged figure leans over a sleeping woman, its presence defined by tense, claw-like hands and a brooding, predatory gaze. Rendered in subdued tones and heavy chiaroscuro, the composition captures the poem’s themes of forbidden desire, spiritual conflict, and tragic seduction, transforming a moment of sleep into a scene of psychological and metaphysical unease.
