The Temptation of Saint Anthony | Pieter Huys | 1547

Pieter Huys’s The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1547) places the saint within a world of hybrid creatures, strange visitors and elaborate architectural fragments. A shadowed rocky shelter anchors one side of the composition, while pale buildings and open distance extend the space beyond the densely worked foreground. Changes of scale and unexpected juxtapositions keep the eye moving between recognisable details and fantastic inventions. The result is a carefully organised vision of disturbance, in which the saint’s contemplation is set against a restless surrounding world.
