The Temptation of Saint Anthony | Jan Mandyn | 16th Century

Jan Mandyn’s The Temptation of Saint Anthony surrounds the solitary hermit with an extraordinary accumulation of grotesque creatures, unstable structures and fantastic incidents. A burning landscape opens beyond the crowded foreground, allowing the eye to move between minute encounters and a much larger vision of disorder. Human, animal and invented forms repeatedly overlap, unsettling familiar distinctions. The composition rewards sustained looking: its dense detail gives the saint’s spiritual trial a vivid outward form, while humour and menace coexist throughout the scene.
