The Pursuit of Happiness (1863–1868), also known as Die Jagd nach dem Glück, is Rudolf Henneberg’s dramatic allegory of ambition and mortality. A rider pursues the elusive figure of Fortune across a precarious bridge, accompanied by Death. A fallen figure beneath the horses and the threatening landscape deepen the warning at the heart of the scene. The painting belongs to the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin.
