This dramatic seascape captures the catastrophic explosion of the French flagship L’Orient during the Battle of the Nile in 1798. A blinding burst of fire tears through the night sky, illuminating warships locked in chaos as debris and smoke engulf the surrounding waters. In the foreground, sailors struggle amid wreckage and violent waves, their small figures overwhelmed by the scale of destruction. Arnald uses intense light, towering smoke, and turbulent seas to convey the terror and sudden finality of naval warfare, transforming a historical moment into a vision of sublime catastrophe.
