This unsettling carnival scene depicts a chaotic crowd celebrating the mock funeral that marks the end of festivities before Lent. Masked figures dance wildly beneath a looming, grotesque banner, their exaggerated gestures blurring the line between joy and madness. Goya’s loose brushwork and darkened palette transform the celebration into something ominous, suggesting hysteria, moral decay, and the thin veneer of social order. Beneath the revelry lies a sharp satire of human folly, where festivity slips easily into violence and irrationality.
