Mary L. Macomber’s Night and Her Daughter Sleep (1902) gives abstract states an intimate human form. Two figures emerge from deep blue darkness, their faces gathered around a small, concentrated source of light. Soft transitions of tone and enveloping drapery draw attention to the closeness of their gestures, while the surrounding shadows remove the scene from any ordinary setting. The composition suggests protection, repose and the surrender of wakefulness, presenting night as a tender presence rather than an empty absence of light.
