This engraving was created by Gustave Doré for the 1876 edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." It depicts the cursed mariner seated alone on the bowsprit of his ship, clutching the lifeless albatross he has slain. Below him, strange water snakes glide through the dark sea, their shimmering forms marking a pivotal moment in the poem, when the mariner begins to recognise the beauty and value of the natural world once more. Through dramatic contrasts of light and shadow and his extraordinary attention to detail, Doré creates a haunting atmosphere of isolation, guilt, and supernatural wonder.
