The Mouth of Hell | 1440

The Mouth of Hell (c. 1440), by the unknown master of the "Catherine of Cleves Hours", presents a vivid medieval vision of damnation. Hell appears as an enormous monstrous face, its glaring eyes and fang-filled mouth forming the entrance to the underworld. Demons, flames and tortured figures fill the scene, while towers and battlements transform the creature into a terrifying fortress.

This imagery follows the medieval tradition of the Hellmouth, in which Hell was represented as the open jaws of a beast. The anonymous artist was active in Utrecht around 1435–1460 and is considered one of the finest manuscript illuminators of the medieval northern Netherlands. His name comes from his masterpiece, the richly illustrated Hours of Catherine of Cleves.
