Elihu Vedder’s The Questioner of the Sphinx (1863) places a solitary human figure before an immense and enigmatic presence. The stark setting and restrained palette lend weight to the encounter, while the contrast in scale suggests questions that resist human explanation. Vedder approaches the ancient subject through the language of poetic allegory, bringing landscape, monument and figure into a concentrated meditation on knowledge and uncertainty. Its quiet gravity anticipates the inward, suggestive concerns of later Symbolist painting.
