L’Oublié! (The Forgotten), circa 1872. Painted by Émile Betsellère. This emotional painting captures the tragic solitude of a dying French soldier left behind on a frozen battlefield, likely during Napoleon’s disastrous Russian campaign. As he lay wounded, he looks skyward with a mixture of pain and silent prayer. Broken weapons and destruction lie scattered around him, while smoke and birds darken the icy horizon. A striking meditation on abandonment, sacrifice, and the human cost of war.
