Frans Floris – The Fall of the Rebellious Angels (1554). This dynamic and dramatic painting by Flemish artist Frans Floris depicts the biblical battle between the Archangel Michael and the rebellious angels who have been cast out of heaven. Executed in the Mannerist style, the composition is filled with muscular figures, chaotic movement, and rich, warm colors. The celestial beings wield swords and spears as they drive monstrous, grotesque demons downward. The intense contrast between divine warriors and the contorted, anguished forms of the fallen angels heightens the sense of conflict and divine justice. Inspired by Italian Renaissance masters like Michelangelo, Floris infuses the scene with energy, emotion, and classical influences, making this work a striking example of Northern Mannerism.
