In The Dream (1883), Pierre Puvis de Chavannes shows a young traveller asleep beneath a tree, his bundle resting nearby. Above him, three floating women cross a star-filled sky: roses identify Love, a laurel wreath represents Glory, and scattered coins announce Fortune. Their movement forms a delicate counterpoint to the sleeper’s stillness. A crescent moon illuminates the restrained palette, while the landscape is organised into broad, simplified areas of colour.
Exhibited at the Salon of 1883, the painting brings the measured structure of Puvis’s large decorative compositions to an intimate scene of sleep and desire. Its flattened forms and spacious arrangement create a sense of suspension, as though the vision belongs to a different rhythm from ordinary life. Rather than illustrating a dramatic event, the artist gives familiar human aspirations a quiet allegorical form, leaving the relationship between the traveller and his dream open to reflection.
