This is a dark, theatrical painting depicting a terrified man recoiling from a ghostly vision. Dressed in black, he clutches his chest while pouring liquid onto a candle held by a demonic goat like figure. Behind him looms shadowy donkey like figures. The work reflects Goya’s fascination with the irrational and the supernatural, part of his broader critique of 18th-century Spanish society.
