José Benlliure y Gil’s The Barque of Charon presents the passage to the underworld as a densely populated, shadow-filled vision. Pale bodies and shrouded figures cluster around the ferryman, whose raised pole establishes a forceful diagonal through the composition. Beyond the boat, an indistinct multitude appears to dissolve into smoke and darkness. Carefully placed highlights draw individual faces and gestures from the gloom, giving this mythological crossing a striking human weight and an atmosphere of uncertainty, vulnerability and finality.
