Horace Vernet’s The Ballad of Leonora (1839) is a dramatic and eerie painting inspired by Gottfried August Bürger’s 1773 ballad Lenore. The scene depicts a spectral knight in shining armor carrying a terrified woman on a galloping black horse through a dark, ghostly landscape. The knight's visor eerily reflects light, and his supernatural nature is reinforced by the chaotic, nightmarish setting, including the graveyard they ride through. The painting captures the ballad’s themes of love, death, and the supernatural, emphasizing the gothic horror of the story with its dramatic lighting, movement, and expressive emotion.
