"The Temptation of Christ on the Mountain" by Duccio di Buoninsegna, created between 1308 and 1311. This work is part of the larger Maestà altarpiece. In this scene, Jesus stands atop a mountain, rejecting the devil’s offer of all the kingdoms of the world. The devil is depicted as a dark, winged figure with clawed feet and hands, a traditional medieval portrayal of Satan. Christ, wearing a red robe with a blue mantle, gestures toward the devil, commanding him to leave. Two angels stand behind Jesus, ready to minister to Him. The cityscape below represents the kingdoms offered by Satan, painted in the architectural style typical of the time. The gold background is characteristic of Byzantine influence, symbolizing the divine light and otherworldliness of the scene. This painting reflects the medieval Christian emphasis on Christ's spiritual authority and victory over temptation.
