A fine and large 18th century Scottish oil on canvas depicting the Coat of Arms of Clan Murray, associated with the Dukes of Atholl, attributed to the Scottish School. The elaborately painted shield, signifying loyalty to the Crown, is flanked by Hercules and The Lion—emblems of strength and courage—beneath a scroll bearing the Latin motto “Sub Spe,” meaning “In Hope.” The composition is richly detailed, with heraldic precision and baroque flourish, presented in an ornate gilt foliate and berry frame.

The work most likely represents the circa 1710 crest of John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl, following his service in the Glorious Revolution under William III. Bestowed the dukedom by Queen Anne in 1703, Murray’s arms symbolically unite the heraldic motifs of the Murray Clan with those of royal authority.
