"Pallas Athena" (1655) by Rembrandt van Rijn is now believed to have been created by Rembrandt with the assistance of a pupil, reflecting his workshop practice. The youthful warrior holds a spear and a shield bearing Medusa’s head, while the owl atop her helmet identifies her as Athena. Once thought part of a trilogy depicting Venus, Juno, and Pallas Athena—possibly commissioned by art dealer Herman Becker—the painting was later trimmed, reducing the prominence of the goddess’s shield in the original composition.
