In Ostend – Die of the Reverters (1908), Spilliaert presents a haunting nocturnal view of the sea wall at Ostend. Dim lamps cast long, ghostly reflections down the dark vertical surface, while the distant shoreline dissolves into mist and shadow. The sparse composition and muted tones create an atmosphere of eerie stillness and isolation, reflecting Spilliaert’s introspective Symbolist style and his fascination with solitude, night, and the psychological landscape of the coastal city.
