"Mors Triumphans" (c. 1650) by Leonard Bramer (1596–1674) is a haunting allegorical painting that depicts the triumph of death. A crowned skeleton, wielding a scythe, rides a skeletal horse across a dark, barren landscape. Two winged skeletons soar ominously above, each holding a bow. Below, a fallen figure in armor lies lifeless, surrounded by symbols of power—a crown, scepter, and robe—emphasizing the inevitability of death regardless of status or strength. The stark chiaroscuro and dramatic symbolism reflect Baroque fascination with mortality and the vanitas theme, reminding viewers of life’s fleeting nature.
