Masked Ball (Danse Macabre) by Arthur Kampf (German, 1864–1950) presents a haunting and theatrical moment, where festivity meets the macabre. At the center, a masked man dances with a graceful woman, but his mask has slipped—revealing a grotesque, decomposed face beneath, evoking the chilling image of Death itself. The woman, adorned in an elegant gown, leans back with her eyes closed, seemingly lost in the dance, oblivious or willfully blind to the horror in her partner’s true form. This eerie contrast between beauty and decay, joy and mortality, reflects the timeless theme of the danse macabre—a reminder of death’s presence behind life’s masquerade.
