Frans Francken II - Mankind’s Eternal Dilemma; the Choice between Virtue and Vice (1633)
This intricate allegorical painting explores the moral struggle between virtue and vice. The upper part depicts a grand palace setting, where Virtue, represented by noble and modest figures, guides mankind toward divine wisdom and celestial rewards, as shown by angels and divine beings above. In contrast, the right side shows Vice, portrayed with indulgent, sensual pleasures and decadence, leading to moral decay. Below, a hellish scene with demons and tormented souls illustrates the consequences of vice, emphasizing eternal damnation. Francken masterfully contrasts light and dark, moral elevation and degradation, presenting humanity’s perpetual moral choice.
