Lemminkäinen’s Mother (1897) by Akseli Gallen-Kallela depicts a scene from the Finnish epic, the Kalevala. Beside the dark river of Tuonela, Lemminkäinen’s mother watches over her son’s body as a bee brings the healing honey that will restore him to life. Stark contrasts, a black swan and scattered bones create a haunting meditation on grief, devotion and resurrection. The painting belongs to the Ateneum, Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki.
