Lady of the Shalott | John Atkinson Grimshaw | 1875

"The Lady of Shalott" is a lyrical ballad by the 19th century English poet Alfred Tennyson. Inspired by the 13th century short prose text Donna di Scalotta, it tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat, a young noblewoman stranded in a tower up the river from Camelot. 

John Atkinson Grimshaw was an English Victorian era artist best known for his nocturnal scenes of urban landscapes. Today, he is considered one of the great painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time
