In Hunted Down (1877), John Pettie concentrates the drama on a solitary Highland figure pressed against a rocky recess. The man’s anxious gaze, drawn sword and tense stance suggest a pursuer beyond the edge of the picture, leaving the source of danger unseen. A richly patterned tartan breaks through the surrounding grey stone and deep shadow, while the exposed figure lends the scene a sense of vulnerability. Pettie’s close attention to texture and gesture turns a moment of concealment into a compelling study of suspense and endurance.
