Bathysphere’s Descent | Else Bostelmann | 1934

Created during the pioneering Bathysphere expeditions of the 1930s, Else Bostelmann’s painting depicts the small spherical vessel descending into the darkness of the deep sea. Strange bioluminescent fish circle its beam of artificial light, emerging briefly from the surrounding blackness.

Bostelmann worked closely with naturalist William Beebe, transforming observations from these historic dives into vivid paintings of a world that had rarely, if ever, been seen by human eyes.

Created from high-quality wood, milled with simple clean lines and presented with a satin finish. Includes an off-white mount that will not discolour or fade with age.
